interesting quote from email:
what ever you give a woman, she will make greater. if you give her sperm, she'll give you a baby. if you give her a house, she'll give you a home. if you give her groceries, she'll give you a meal. if you give her a smile, she'll give you her heart.
she multiplies and enlarges what is given to her. so if you give her any crap, be ready to receive a ton of shit.

it's so so fun!

i've always loved the phase Campus Crusade always use: "in the power of the Holy Spirit". it became my standard, my mantra, my chant. but it eluded me. for years of serving in ministry i felt that the power trickled like a leaking tap instead of a fire hydrant hose. now i realise "in the power of the Holy Spirit" is what it is - in the power of the Holy Spirit. you wont be able to come away claiming any bit of credit. it's not about how well-planned, well-executed etc. He shows up and it is clear only He alone can do it. there's clear power, clear who's in control - definitely not man.

Robert Capon:
i am and i am not a universalist. i am one if you are talking about what God in Christ has done to save the world. The Lamb of god has not taken away the sins of some - of only the good, or the cooperative, or the select few who can manage to get their act together and die as perfect peaches. He has taken away the sins of the world - of every last being in it - and he has dropped them down the black hole of Jesus' death. On the cross, he has shut up forever on the subject of guilt: "There is therefore now no condemnation..." All human beings, at all times and places are home free whether they know it or not, feel it or not, believe it or not.

But i m not a universalist if you are talking about what people may do about accepting that happy-go-lucky gift of God's grace. i take with utter seriousness everything that Jesus had to say about hell, including the eternal torment that such a foolish non-acceptance of His already-given acceptance must entail. All theologians who hold Scripture to be the Word of God must inevitably include in their work a tractate on hell. But i will not - because Jesus did not - locate hell outside the realm of grace. Grace is forever sovereign, even in Jesus' parables of judgement.

the consequence of having a "grasshopper mentality" -
you got to take God at His word and not indulge your low self esteem. God's people are giant slayers, walls crumble before them (see Jericho)... you can keep your "grasshopper mentality". but you would have forfeit the promised land and bought yourself a 40-year desert cruise to nowhere. see Deut 1:19-46, Numbers 13.

Kungfu Panda 2:

Master Shifu: anything is possible when you have inner peace.

Goat (Soothsayer): your story may not have such a happy beginning. this does not make who you are... you are who you choose to be. who are you, Panda?

Lord of the Rings
Frodo: I can't do this, Sam.

Sam: I know. It's all wrong. By rights we shouldn't even be here. But we are. It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something.

Frodo: What are we holding onto, Sam?

Sam: That there's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo... and it's worth fighting for.
